d: 6.2.1874 citizen of the Republic of Texas age: 72 d/o: After her husband’s death in Tennessee, Mahala contracted with Sterling C. Robertson’s Nashville Colony to move to Texas. Now a widow with five young children, they left Tennessee along with a group of family and friends. Davy Crockett, a Tennessee neighbor, traveled with the group. They arrived at the Falls on the Brazos River in January 1836. In February, she and four of her five sons were sworn in as Colonists at Robertson’s headquarters. It was the time of the Texas Revolution and her sons were involved with the Texas Rangers, the Texas Army and the Indian fights. She was caught up in the first and second Runaway Scrapes. Her “Headright Certificate” as head of household in the Republic of Texas was issued on February 5, 1838 at old Franklin - her claim was located along the east bank of the Brazos River fronting the Old San Antonio Road. She later purchased land in Wheelock and resided there until her death. She is a brave noble woman of Texas. |
